Shaun Tan was not always an author-illustrator.

Shaun Tan. He was a short kid, and he began drawing to take his mind off the bullying of others. As a child he enjoyed drawing robots, aliens and dinosaurs, and as a teen he had his illustrations published in a science fiction magazine. He had originally wanted to be a genetic scientist, but after doing a special art class for gifted students at Balcatta senior high school he focused on a career in arts.

As a teenager he illustrated science fiction and horror stories in a small press magazine. In he graduated from the University of Western Australia with a diploma in fine arts, English and history. It is about a boy who finds a strange creature while on the beach, and assuming it is lost, tries to find where it came from. The story is about a man who leaves his country as a refugee to build a life for himself and his family in a place safer than where they were living.

In he received his 2nd World Fantasy Award—Artist.

Shaun Tan, the son of a Malaysian-Chinese father and an Anglo-Irish mother, is a multi-award winning artist and writer who lives and works in Melbourne.

This is awarded by the World Fantasy Convention yearly for the best fantasy fiction and art published during the past year. This book is a collection of short stories both written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. In he had two books published. The next year he had three books published. He is married to Inari Kiuru who is an artist also.
