If there is, nevertheless, good reason to put them on paper — and I fear that there is — this testifies to some remarkable features of contemporary French intellectual culture. This, however, I have come to regard as normal.

I do not want to discuss individuals. Let us suppose further that he is correct in these conclusions — whether he is or not is plainly irrelevant in this context. Such attitudes are not uncommon. They are typical, for example of American Communists and no doubt their counterparts elsewhere.
