I know this because my mother lived through the referendum that confirmed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would be counted as part of the Australian population, like all other Australians, and that the Commonwealth would be able to make laws for them.

Last year, Jenny decided to join the referendum engagement group to work with government on successfully implementing the referendum. When I took my daughter, Lux, to her first march — the Mount Druitt Reconciliation March held on Darug land — I watched my year-old mum, wearing a Yes shirt, speak with every person there. Jenny has dedicated her life to advocacy and change.
I wanted my mum to share her life story, her hopes for the future and her vision for this country if the referendum is successful. I work at the coalface.
